Groundbreaking ceremony of the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge construction project, connecting Thu Thiem and District 1
03/02/2015
To accelerate the development of Thu Thiem New Urban Area, particularly Functional Area No. 1 (Financial and commercial center), HCM City People's Committee and investors held a groundbreaking ceremony on February 3rd 2015 to commence construction of Thu Thiem 2 Bridge. The bridge, connecting Districts 1 and 2, is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. Thu Thiem 2 Bridge will span the Saigon River, starting at the intersection of Ton Duc Thang and Le Duan streets (District 1) and connecting to Route R1 in Thu Thiem New Urban Area (District 2). The project will be implemented under a Build-Transfer (BT) contract.
Thu Thiem 2 Bridge project boasts a total investment of 4.26 trillion VND. This breaks down as follows: construction and consulting costs (2.283 trillion VND), technical infrastructure relocation and clearance compensation (308.5 billion VND), and provisions (491 billion VND for volume of works and salary might change; 1.18 trillion VND for price inflation and loan interest). To finance these costs, the HCM City People's Committee, with the Prime Minister's approval, allocated 13.6 hectares of land in Thu Thiem New Urban Area to the investor.
Thu Thiem 2 Bridge has a grand scale with six lanes (four dedicated to cars and two mixed lanes). Stretching nearly 1.5 kilometers in length, the bridge features a cable-stayed design for the nearly 900-meter central section. The 113-meter-tall main tower, leaning gracefully towards Thu Thiem, serves as a symbolic gateway from the city center to the new urban area. Artistic lighting will further enhance the bridge's visual impact, transforming it into a prominent architectural landmark on the Saigon River, both day and night.
