Chu Lai International Port Co., Ltd. submitted a plan to expand and upgrade Chu Lai Port in Nui Thanh district to Quang Nam province's authorities and Ministry of Transport of Vietnam, according to the province's Management Board of Economic Zones and Industrial Zones. The expansion will increase the port's capacity to handle vessels up to 50,000 DWT. The project is expected to cost VND1.589 trillion (US$64.8 million) and is slated for implementation in the 2024-2025 period.
Vietnam's general seaport development plan, with a vision to 2030, earmarks Chu Lai Port for upgrade to a grade 1 port (grading as a national or regional port). Located in the heart of the Vietnam's Central Key Economic Region, Chu Lai Port boasts convenient transport connectivity. It has direct access to National Highway No.1A, coastal roads, the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, and major industrial areas like Tam Thang Industrial Park (Quang Nam province) and VSIP Industrial Park and Dung Quat Economic Zone (neighboring Quang Ngai province).
With an annual capacity of 3 million tons, Chu Lai Port can handle three vessels simultaneously, each with a capacity of 30,000 tons. The port boasts a 500-meter wharf and is developing extensive transportation networks, including international connections from the Chu Lai Economic Zone to major ports in China, South Korea, Japan, and India.
