Construction of Long Thanh Bridge, the package 2 of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway project

10/09/2012
As part of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway project, the Long Thanh Bridge is the largest structure within Package 2. This impressive bridge spans the Dong Nai River, connecting District 9 of Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh District of Dong Nai Province. At 3,100 meters in total length, the bridge itself measures 2,346 meters, with the remaining section consisting of approach roads. Designed for four lanes of traffic with a 100 km/h speed limit, Package 2 carries a contract value exceeding 1,219 billion VND.

The Long Thanh Bridge construction project faces a major challenge with piling works for pier construction due to the extremely complicated geology. The Concrete 6 Corporation (also known as Beton 6 or BT 6), a bridge specialist subsidiary of Cienco 6, has spent nearly two years struggling to drill bored piles for the bridge piers. The challenge lies in the layers of gravel, sand and weathered rock at about 45 meters deep where water seepage is also present. This complex geology causes the sand to flow and the partition to collapse during drilling. Despite repeated attempts and changes in method, the contractor hasn't been able to overcome this obstacle. Currently, only about 4 meters remain to be drilled before reaching the solid rock layer at the bottom.

To address the challenge, Cienco 6 Corporation deployed an additional member, 623 Construction Company, to the project. They also invested in a new RCD drilling rig (Reverse Circulation Drilling) valued at over 6 billion VND specifically for this construction. Unlike traditional drilling rig with drilling bucket, this RCD rig operates on a steel deck and utilizes a direct reversible circulation method. This technology, previously used successfully in constructing Can Tho Bridge, offers greater efficiency and is expected to expedite the completion of Long Thanh Bridge.

Thien An Construction and Mechanical Co., Ltd. is proud to be part of package 2 for the Long Thanh Bridge project. Our scope of work includes the construction of D1200 bored piles, piers, and balanced cantilever segmental box girders.
